Young cyclist fighting for life after northwest valley collision

A 5-year-old boy remains in critical condition at University Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Sunday afternoon in northwest Las Vegas.
Accident details emerge from investigation
The collision occurred at approximately 3:29 p.m. near the intersection of Round Castle Street and Gold Find Court, a residential area close to West Tropical Parkway and North Tenaya Way. According to Metropolitan Police Department investigators, the child entered the path of a northbound 2006 Cadillac sedan and was struck by the vehicle.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene and transported the young victim to UMC’s Trauma Center, where medical staff continue to treat his critical injuries.
Driver cooperates with authorities
The 33-year-old Las Vegas woman driving the Cadillac immediately stopped after the collision and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. Police confirmed that the driver showed no signs of impairment at the time of the accident.
As of Sunday evening, the collision remained under active investigation by Metro’s traffic division. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the accident or whether any citations will be issued.
Growing concern over bicycle safety in Las Vegas
This incident adds to troubling statistics about bicycle safety in Las Vegas. According to Nevada Department of Transportation data, Las Vegas averages approximately 490 bicycle accidents annually, with Clark County accounting for 82.7% of all bicycle accidents statewide. The most dangerous time for cyclists is between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., when 56% of bicycle crashes occur.
Metro’s Collision Investigation Section continues to investigate Sunday’s accident. According to News 3 Las Vegas, evidence at the scene, witness statements, and video surveillance confirmed that the collision occurred when the boy entered the path of the Cadillac, throwing him from his bicycle into the roadway.
The incident serves as a stark reminder about the vulnerability of young cyclists, especially considering that most child bicycle crashes occur between May and August during afternoon hours, typically within one mile of home.
