Tyrone Thompson Elementary music teacher wins Nevada Teacher of the Year

Alexandra Snabon-Jun recognized for transforming music education for 900+ students
A Las Vegas elementary school music teacher who has dedicated over two decades to inspiring young musicians was named Nevada’s 2026 Teacher of the Year during a surprise ceremony Wednesday at her school.
Alexandra Snabon-Jun, the sole music educator at Tyrone Thompson Elementary School, will represent Nevada in the prestigious National Teacher of the Year program. The honor recognizes her exceptional work building a comprehensive music program that serves more than 900 students.
Building a music program from scratch
Jun’s impact extends far beyond typical music class instruction. She leads two school choirs, produces full-scale musicals, and teaches students a diverse range of instruments including percussion, ukulele, and recorders, while also incorporating dance into her curriculum.
“When I think of Ali Jun, two adjectives come to mind, which are passionate and fun for kids,” said Robert Hinchliffe, Principal of Tyrone Thompson Elementary. “She makes every lesson incredibly engaging in many ways, and is beloved by both students and parents within our community. She has built our music and choir program from the ground up, and her devotion to this field is unparalleled.”
Recognition for excellence
Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert praised Jun’s daily dedication, calling her a “rockstar” educator whose energy creates an environment where students thrive.
“Each day, her passion for teaching and educating students is evident as she inspires students to be their very best. She epitomizes what it means to make CCSD the Destination District,” Ebert said.
The Nevada State Teacher of the Year program, facilitated by the Council of Chief State School Officers, celebrates educators who demonstrate excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Winners serve as ambassadors for the teaching profession and advocates for public education.
Following in distinguished footsteps
Jun joins an elite group of Nevada educators who have earned this recognition. The state has a strong track record in the national competition—in 2021, Nevada’s Juliana Urtubey was named National Teacher of the Year, bringing additional recognition to the Silver State’s educational community.
As the 2026 Nevada Teacher of the Year, Jun will have opportunities to share her expertise with fellow educators across the state and compete for the national title. Her selection highlights the critical role arts education plays in student development and the dedication of teachers who ensure every child has access to music education, regardless of school resources.
The surprise announcement at Tyrone Thompson Elementary allowed Jun’s students and colleagues to celebrate alongside her, recognizing not just an individual achievement but the power of music education to transform young lives.
