Suspected DUI crash leaves passenger critically injured in south Las Vegas

A 61-year-old woman remains in critical condition at Sunrise Hospital following a suspected DUI collision Sunday evening in south Las Vegas, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
The crash
The collision occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on East Warm Springs Road at Amigo Street, located just west of the 215 Beltway exit. LVMPD investigators determined that a 2018 Jeep Wrangler traveling westbound on Warm Springs attempted a left turn as a 2014 Jeep Cherokee approached from the eastbound direction.
The two vehicles collided at the intersection, critically injuring a 61-year-old passenger in the Cherokee. She was transported to Sunrise Hospital where her condition remained critical as of Monday morning. The Cherokee’s driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Arrest and charges
The driver of the Wrangler, identified as 34-year-old Michelle Lane, showed signs of impairment at the scene and was subsequently arrested. Lane was booked into Clark County Detention Center on charges of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm.
According to jail records, Lane’s first court appearance was scheduled for Monday afternoon. Nevada law treats DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm as a felony, carrying potential penalties of two to 20 years in prison and fines up to $5,000.
Growing DUI concerns in Las Vegas
This latest incident adds to growing concerns about impaired driving in the Las Vegas Valley. Las Vegas has seen drunk driving accidents increase by 35.25% from 2018 to 2023, with accidents peaking in 2022 at 2,456 incidents.
Despite Las Vegas’s reputation as a party destination, the city actually ranked as having the third lowest drunk driving score among major U.S. cities in a recent safety analysis, though Nevada still records an average of 158 DUI-related deaths annually.
The Warm Springs Road corridor has been the site of multiple serious traffic incidents this year, including several involving suspected impaired drivers. Earlier this year, the area saw a deadly pedestrian collision on Warm Springs near Mann Street that resulted in DUI charges against the driver.
Safety reminders
With Las Vegas’s 24-hour entertainment scene and high tourism levels, law enforcement continues to emphasize the importance of using rideshare services, designated drivers, or public transportation when consuming alcohol. The city provides numerous alternatives to prevent impaired driving, including extensive taxi and rideshare availability.
