Red Cross mobilizes emergency shelter as thousands remain without power following windstorm

Las Vegas Convention Center transforms into relief hub for displaced residents
In the wake of Tuesday’s devastating windstorm, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada has transformed the Las Vegas Convention Center into a lifeline for residents still grappling with extended power outages. With approximately 1,500 homes across Clark County remaining without electricity as of Wednesday, the emergency shelter has become a crucial resource for those unable to safely remain in their homes.
Emergency shelter operations
The Red Cross has established operations in the South Hall, Room S2 of the Las Vegas Convention Center, where approximately 50 residents sought refuge Wednesday night. The shelter, which opened Wednesday morning, provides essential services including air conditioning, cots, food, water, and access to medical support for those displaced by the ongoing power crisis.
“We are committed to supporting our community during this time of need,” stated Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “The shelter is open to anyone impacted by the power outages, and we will stay as long as necessary to provide relief and assistance.”
The organization has made it clear that all disaster assistance is provided free of charge and is available to everyone in need, regardless of their circumstances. Red Cross volunteers, working alongside local emergency management and community partners, are coordinating comprehensive relief efforts to ensure no resident goes without essential support.
Accessibility and transportation
Understanding the challenges faced by residents without power or transportation, multiple support systems have been put in place. The shelter is accessible via the Platinum Lot off Joe W. Brown Drive, with ample parking available for those able to drive themselves.
For residents unable to reach the shelter independently, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) has arranged bus service from a central pickup location at the Walmart on 3075 East Tropicana Avenue. Buses ran continuously until 2 p.m. Wednesday, with additional transportation options available through RTC’s Paratransit service for those requiring medical transport. Residents needing specialized transportation can call 702-228-4800 and select option 3.
Pet-friendly accommodations
Recognizing that pets are family members, Clark County Animal Protection Services has partnered with the Red Cross to provide kennel space at the convention center. This ensures that evacuees don’t have to choose between seeking shelter and caring for their beloved animals. Residents are asked to bring appropriate containers or kennels for their pets.
For those with animals other than cats or dogs, or pets with unique needs, Animal Protection Services offers specialized assistance. Pet owners can contact them directly at 702-455-7710 to arrange appropriate accommodations.
Senior living facility evacuation
The shelter has taken on added significance as entire facilities face extended outages. Holiday Montara Meadows Senior Living Center, one of several care facilities affected by the power loss, began evacuating residents to the convention center Wednesday evening. The facility, which houses vulnerable elderly residents, lost all power including air conditioning and elevator service during Tuesday’s storm.
Staff at the senior center worked tirelessly to ensure resident safety, bringing in buses to serve as temporary cooling centers and mobile charging stations before the decision was made to evacuate. While not mandatory initially, emergency services strongly encouraged the move, anticipating power could remain out for two days or longer in some areas.
Critical safety reminders
As recovery efforts continue, the Red Cross and emergency officials are emphasizing crucial safety information for those dealing with power outages:
Electrical hazards:
- Stay at least 35 feet away from any downed power lines
- Report all downed lines immediately to 911
- Never touch electrical equipment that may have been exposed to water
- Avoid entering flooded areas where electrical hazards may exist
Food safety:
- Discard any perishable food that has been at 40°F or warmer
- When in doubt, throw it out—especially dairy and meat products
- Check with healthcare providers about temperature-sensitive medications
Generator safety:
- Use generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills outdoors only
- Maintain at least 20 feet distance from windows and doors
- Never use these devices in enclosed spaces to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Community response
The shelter operation represents just one facet of the broader community response to the crisis. NV Energy continues working around the clock to restore power, while various community organizations have mobilized to support affected residents. The Red Cross has indicated they are not currently accepting donations at the shelter, focusing instead on direct service provision.
Looking ahead
As Las Vegas enters its third day of recovery from the windstorm, the Red Cross shelter stands ready to accommodate residents for as long as necessary. With some areas potentially facing power outages extending through Friday, the convention center shelter may serve as home for dozens of residents for several more days.
The activation of this emergency shelter underscores both the severity of Tuesday’s weather event and the strength of Southern Nevada’s disaster response infrastructure. As one of the region’s most significant weather-related evacuations in recent years, it serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and community support systems.
