On this day in history: Paris Las Vegas celebrates its grand opening

Las Vegas, NV — September 1, 1999 marked a new era on the Strip as the vibrant essence of Paris, France, was brought to life in the heart of Southern Nevada. Paris Las Vegas officially opened its doors, unveiling a stunning resort that would become one of the city’s most iconic properties.
A grand debut with celebrity flair
The grand opening event was anything but modest. A lavish VIP celebration welcomed state and city officials, celebrities, and notable figures from around the world. Guests included then-Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn, former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve, and businessman — and future president — Donald Trump.
A tribute to Parisian landmarks
Paris Las Vegas set itself apart from the start. Developed by Bally’s and announced in 1997, the project carried a price tag of over $785 million and was envisioned as a French-themed escape in the desert. It features meticulously designed replicas of several of Paris’ most recognizable landmarks:
- The Eiffel Tower, scaled to half its original height
- The Arc de Triomphe
- The Paris Opera House
- The Louvre
- The Musée d’Orsay
Its eye-catching 75-foot hot air balloon marquee has become a symbol of the property, glowing brightly along the Las Vegas Strip.
From casino floor to skyline expansion
Upon opening, the resort offered more than 95,000 square feet of casino gaming and 2,900 hotel rooms, drawing both tourists and locals eager to experience a taste of Europe in Nevada. Over the years, the property continued to evolve. In 2024, the resort completed the conversion of the Versailles Tower, bringing its total room count to over 3,600.
A lasting presence on the Strip
Paris Las Vegas remains a major destination for visitors from around the globe. Its blend of classic French architecture, themed dining, high-end entertainment, and prime location continues to attract millions annually. As the resort celebrates another year since its debut, it serves as a reminder of the city’s dedication to transforming imagination into reality — Las Vegas style.
