Major redevelopment plan aims to transform Chinatown into walkable destination

LAS VEGAS, NV — Las Vegas’ vibrant Chinatown district is set for a major transformation, as new renderings reveal a bold vision to turn the bustling Spring Mountain corridor into a safer, greener, and more walkable destination for locals and tourists alike.
The project, known as Inspiring Spring Mountain, is part of a broader effort by Clark County to revitalize one of the city’s fastest-growing cultural and commercial hubs. For months, community input has poured in from business owners, residents, and visitors — all weighing in on issues like traffic, pedestrian safety, parking congestion, and aesthetics.
Starting July 1, Chinatown will officially be designated a redevelopment area, allowing some property tax revenues to be reinvested directly into street, sidewalk, and infrastructure improvements.
“From day one, the community made it clear: we want a corridor that’s safer, walkable, and greener,” said Commissioner Justin Jones of the Clark County Commission. “Spring Mountain started as an industrial corridor. When Chinatown Plaza opened over 25 years ago, the area began to evolve — but it was never truly designed for pedestrians. This is our opportunity to fix that.”
What’s in the vision: Trees, art, safety & more
The new renderings offer a glimpse into what the future of Chinatown could look like. Among the proposed features: wider sidewalks lined with shade trees for pedestrian comfort, public art installations and upgraded streetlamps to enhance visual appeal, crosswalk improvements and added safety features for foot traffic, and increased greenery to bring a more inviting and sustainable urban environment.
These designs are still in the concept phase, Jones noted. The next step is for project leaders to meet with local businesses and stakeholders to gather feedback and refine the proposals.
Coming soon: Key changes already in motion
While some of the upgrades are still being finalized, others are already scheduled to begin.
A new crosswalk connecting Chinatown Plaza to Shanghai Plaza will begin construction this fall and is expected to be completed by Lunar New Year 2026, improving pedestrian access and safety across Spring Mountain Road.
To improve public safety, more pedestrian street cameras will be installed along the sidewalks of the corridor.
Utility infrastructure upgrades are also in the works. Aging electric and water lines will be replaced, and officials are exploring the possibility of moving overhead power lines underground to improve aesthetics and reliability.
Repaving of Spring Mountain Road will begin early next year, starting west of Decatur Boulevard. Planners aim to finalize decisions affecting the heart of Chinatown — from I-15 to Decatur — before that phase begins.
A community-driven future
Clark County officials emphasized that these renderings are just a starting point. The future of Chinatown’s redevelopment will be shaped by continued input from local residents, business owners, and stakeholders.
A final report outlining the project’s next steps is expected this fall, once further community feedback has been collected.
In the meantime, visitors and locals can look forward to a reimagined corridor — one built not just for cars, but for people. As Commissioner Jones said, “We want to make Spring Mountain the corridor it always should have been.”
