Las Vegas resident faces charges in fatal Sparks pedestrian crash

48-year-old arrested after fleeing scene of deadly collision last month
A Las Vegas man is behind bars in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Sparks nearly two weeks ago.
Kyle Cormier, 48, was arrested July 8 by the Sparks Police Major Accident Investigation Team following an intensive investigation into the June 29 incident. He now faces serious charges related to the death of a pedestrian who has yet to be publicly identified.
Fatal collision at busy intersection
The tragic incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening at the intersection of Glendale Avenue and South 21st Street in Sparks. Emergency responders from Sparks Police, Sparks Fire Department, and REMSA rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
By the time first responders arrived, Cormier had allegedly fled the scene, leaving the critically injured pedestrian behind. The victim was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead.
Multiple charges filed
Cormier was booked into the Washoe County Jail on several charges:
- Duty to stop at the scene of a crash involving death
- Duty to give information and render aid
- Expired vehicle registration
The first two charges are directly related to Nevada’s hit-and-run laws, which require drivers involved in accidents to remain at the scene, provide assistance to injured parties, and exchange information with other involved parties and law enforcement.
Investigation leads to arrest
The Sparks Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team worked the case for over a week before tracking down and arresting Cormier. Authorities have not released details about how they identified him as the suspect or what evidence led to his arrest.
The victim’s identity remains withheld pending notification of next of kin, a standard procedure in fatal incident investigations.
Growing concern over hit-and-run incidents
This case highlights the ongoing issue of hit-and-run crashes in Nevada, where drivers flee accident scenes at alarming rates. The incident also underscores the importance of inter-jurisdictional cooperation, as a Las Vegas resident was successfully tracked down for a crime committed in the Reno-Sparks area.
The Sparks Police Department acknowledged the public’s assistance in the investigation, though specific details about tips or witness accounts have not been disclosed.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Sparks Police Department as the investigation continues.
