Las Vegas attorney David Chesnoff appointed to Homeland Security Advisory Council by president Trump

LAS VEGAS — Longtime Las Vegas criminal defense attorney David Chesnoff has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Advisory Council, the Trump administration announced Tuesday. Chesnoff, known for representing high-profile clients and for his deep roots in the Las Vegas legal community, will serve in a part-time, voluntary role advising on national security and homeland protection.
Appointment to Homeland Security Council
Chesnoff is one of 22 new members appointed to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which was established in 2022 to provide guidance and expertise to the Secretary of Homeland Security. The council supports efforts in areas such as national security, counterterrorism, and homeland defense.
“I’m extremely proud, and I look forward to hard work at a time in our country’s history where the protection of the homeland is very important,” Chesnoff told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I’m glad they added someone with my life experience and work on constitutional issues over the years.”
Chesnoff will work under Secretary Kristi Noem, who currently heads the Department of Homeland Security.
A career built in Las Vegas
Chesnoff has practiced law in Las Vegas for over four decades, establishing himself as one of the most prominent defense attorneys in the region. A former law partner of ex-Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Chesnoff has represented a long list of celebrities and public figures over the years, including Bruno Mars, Mike Tyson, members of Michael Jackson’s family, and high-profile defendants such as former Raiders player Henry Ruggs and ex-FBI informant Alexander Smirnov.
“In Vegas, you get to meet a cross section of people from all over the country and all over the world,” Chesnoff said. “So I’ve been fortunate enough to understand differences between people, and I also have been involved in the criminal justice system. I think that adds to my ability to help.”
Community involvement and international work
In addition to his legal career, Chesnoff has been active in humanitarian causes. In 2023, he traveled to Israel to volunteer during the Israel-Hamas conflict, spending a week at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv. There, he helped with logistics and inventory support for medical supplies used in treating wounded soldiers.
His political contributions have spanned both sides of the aisle. Chesnoff has donated to Democratic Rep. Susie Lee, Sen. Jacky Rosen, and Republican Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign. Though he identifies as an independent thinker, he publicly expressed support for Donald Trump.
First advisory meeting set for July 2
Chesnoff’s appointment is effective immediately, with the council scheduled to hold its first meeting on July 2 in Washington, D.C. The position is non-paid and part-time, with members offering their experience and input on key issues affecting national and homeland security.
