Construction advances on new Las Vegas Metro Police substation in underserved East Valley

Work continues on a long-awaited Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department substation on South Hollywood Boulevard, bringing enhanced public safety resources to an area that community leaders say has been overlooked for decades.
Filling a critical service gap
The new facility, expected to open in 2026, will serve the East Las Vegas area between existing substations to the north and south. District F County Commissioner Tick Segerblom described the region around Sahara Avenue, Charleston Boulevard, and Hollywood Boulevard as having been “kind of a no man’s land” in terms of police coverage.
“I never thought that when I was elected, police officers would be the number one priority but that is the number one priority,” Segerblom told reporters during a recent site visit, reflecting on six years of community advocacy for increased police presence in the area.
The substation’s strategic location places it adjacent to an existing fire station and across from a high school, with multiple community parks within a mile radius. This positioning allows for integrated public safety services and increased visibility in neighborhoods that residents say have long felt neglected.
Historic investment in East Las Vegas
East Las Vegas represents one of the valley’s oldest neighborhoods, making the absence of a dedicated police station particularly notable. The new facility will help address decades of underinvestment in public safety infrastructure for the area.
“The fact that they didn’t have a police station is pretty amazing so the fact that we’re going to have one is very exciting,” Segerblom noted, emphasizing the historic significance of the project for longtime residents.
Construction crews are making visible progress on the site, transforming what was once vacant land into a modern law enforcement facility that will house administrative offices, interview rooms, evidence storage, and other essential police infrastructure.
Operational changes ahead
When the substation opens, it will trigger a significant reorganization of Metro’s area commands. Officers and resources currently stationed at the Southeast Area Command will relocate to the new East Las Vegas facility, allowing for renovation and rebuilding of the existing Southeast station.
This two-phase approach ensures continuous police coverage while modernizing aging infrastructure across the valley. The plan reflects Metro’s commitment to maintaining service levels during the transition period.
Community impact and expectations
Local residents and business owners have expressed enthusiasm about the increased police presence the substation will bring. Commissioner Segerblom highlighted the psychological and practical benefits of having patrol vehicles regularly visible in neighborhoods.
“Having the cop cars here driving around the neighborhoods. It makes people feel safer and they are safer,” he explained, noting that visible law enforcement presence often serves as a deterrent to criminal activity.
The project represents years of community advocacy, with residents consistently raising public safety concerns at town halls and commission meetings since Segerblom took office. The commissioner acknowledged this persistence, stating, “I appreciate people’s patience and persistence. Honestly, if you stick around long enough, good things happen and that’s what this is.”
Timeline remains on track
Despite construction challenges affecting projects across the valley, officials report the East Las Vegas substation remains on schedule for its 2026 opening. The facility will join Metro’s network of area commands serving the Las Vegas Valley, which currently includes stations in Downtown, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Spring Valley, Enterprise, South Central, and Summerlin areas.
“It’s going to be a huge change for everybody,” Segerblom predicted, expressing optimism about the substation’s potential to transform public safety dynamics in East Las Vegas.
The project represents part of Metro’s broader effort to ensure adequate police coverage as the valley continues its rapid growth, with new facilities helping to reduce response times and provide better community-oriented policing services to all neighborhoods.
