Clark County seeks 75 crossing guards across Las Vegas valley ahead of school year

Part-time roles aim to boost student safety on the first day of classes
With classes set to begin on Monday, August 11, the Clark County School District is issuing a call for approximately 75 part-time crossing guards to help ensure student safety throughout the Las Vegas Valley, including in Henderson, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated Clark County. These roles pay $17 per hour, making them an attractive option for community-minded residents.
Who can apply?
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Required to pass a background check and fingerprinting
- Applications are being accepted now, with hiring events scheduled from July 21–24 at six local libraries
Crossing guards typically work one hour before school and one hour after dismissal, usually near their own neighborhoods, making the position manageable for many residents.
Why the urgency?
A recent spike in incidents involving students in school zones has driven this recruitment push. While the number of crashes involving middle school students has dropped by nearly 70% since middle schools began receiving guards, there remains a pressing need to expand coverage—especially following the tragic death of a high school senior in May. Clarke County commissioners note that 97 children were struck by vehicles in school zones between 2023 and 2024, prompting an urgent call to action.
Expanding to include middle schools last year showed swift, measurable results in crash reductions, and district leaders now want to carry that success forward—eventually extending coverage to high schools as well.
How to apply
Hiring events will be held at:
- Monday, July 21 – Enterprise Library (Las Vegas Blvd)
- Tuesday, July 22 – Alexander Library (North Las Vegas) & Rainbow Library (Buffalo Drive)
- Wednesday, July 23 – East Las Vegas Library & Clark County Library (Flamingo Rd)
- Thursday, July 24 – Sahara West Library
Applications are processed on-site at these events. Guards will be assigned to locations close to home, and the schedule aligns with school drop-off and pick-up times.
