Clark County adds new crosswalk near Strip to improve pedestrian safety

High-traffic location gets fresh safety upgrade
A brand-new crosswalk is being installed at Convention Center Drive near Las Vegas Boulevard, just north of the Strip, as part of Clark County’s effort to protect pedestrians in one of the valley’s busiest areas. The approved crossing includes updated road markings and flashing beacons designed to help walkers safely navigate through heavy traffic and tourist crowds.
Local resident Kourtney Birton, who lives nearby, said crossing the road felt like a gamble before the upgrade: “You’re always having to dodge cars and time it out perfectly,” she said, calling the new crosswalk a “much-needed change.”
Rising stats underlie improvements
Pedestrian safety has become a growing concern. In 2025, Nevada reported 162 traffic fatalities, with 115 occurring in Clark County. Approximately 40 pedestrian deaths were recorded in this area through May, compared to 46 statewide. Though down about 9.5% from the previous year, pedestrian fatalities still demand action.
What’s behind the update?
Pedestrian advocates and elected officials, including Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, view the new crosswalk as a step in the right direction. “While pedestrian fatalities remain an issue, it’s encouraging to see Clark County taking direct action,” Segerblom said.
Another recent measure, a pedestrian-activated signal at Convention Center Drive and Channel 8 Drive, highlights the county’s broader safety strategy. These are part of a multi-step program to make key corridors like those near the Convention Center and Strip more walkable and secure.
Community reaction
Local walker Moises Perez praised the timing, saying the crosswalk will help with “all the tourists and convention-goers.” He called it “great” that the community prioritizes safety amid heavy pedestrian traffic.
Looking ahead
While this crosswalk nears completion, officials are encouraging further enhancements—such as mid-block signals, median refuge islands, and better street lighting—especially where foot traffic and vehicle speed collide. With officials urging systemic change, this is just one piece of a broader roadmap to safer streets across Southern Nevada.
