Athletics’ Las Vegas ballpark costs soar past $2 billion as construction challenges mount

The Oakland Athletics’ future Las Vegas ballpark has officially become one of the most expensive sports venues in American history, with owner John Fisher confirming costs have ballooned to over $2 billion—a staggering increase from the initial $1.5 billion estimate announced when the relocation was approved.
Record-breaking price tag
Speaking to The Nevada Independent while watching his team play in Sacramento, Fisher acknowledged the dramatic cost escalation but remained committed to the project. “The costs have gone up as more detail comes in. That’s fine,” Fisher said. “From the very beginning, we wanted a design that was unique. Vegas is one of the most unique towns in the world.”
The revised figure makes the 33,000-seat ballpark more expensive than the Las Vegas Raiders’ $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium, despite having roughly half the seating capacity. Only the $2.3 billion Sphere, which itself came in at nearly double its original budget, surpasses the baseball stadium as Vegas’s most expensive non-gaming construction project.
Financial structure under scrutiny
The funding gap has raised significant questions about the project’s viability. Initial financing plans included:
- $1.1 billion equity contribution from the Fisher family
- $300 million construction loan from U.S. Bank and Goldman Sachs
- $380 million in public funding from Nevada taxpayers
However, with costs now exceeding $2 billion, Fisher faces a shortfall of approximately $220 million or more. The A’s vice chairman Sandy Dean previously stated that any budget increases would be the team’s responsibility, putting additional pressure on Fisher’s resources.
Seeking investment partners
To bridge the funding gap, Fisher is actively pursuing minority investors who could contribute up to $550 million to the project. Last month, Aramark Sports + Entertainment became the first announced partner, reportedly investing $100 million for a minority stake in the franchise while also securing the stadium’s food and beverage concession rights.
“My goal here is to find not just partners, but the right partners,” Fisher explained. “We need to make sure that we have partners who not only love the game of baseball but love being a part of Las Vegas Athletics and this stadium.”
Construction challenges ahead
The project faces additional headwinds from rising material costs, particularly steel and aluminum, which now face 50% tariffs. These increased costs weren’t factored into earlier estimates, potentially pushing the final price tag even higher.
Despite the financial challenges, construction officially began in June 2025 at the former Tropicana Hotel site, with the team maintaining its target of opening for the 2028 season. A’s President Marc Badain, who previously oversaw Allegiant Stadium’s construction, expressed confidence in contingency planning.
Fisher’s Vegas commitment
While grappling with stadium financing, Fisher has already planted roots in Las Vegas. Property records reveal he purchased a $29.25 million mansion in December 2024 within the exclusive Summit Club in Summerlin—one of the most expensive home sales in Las Vegas history. The 10,000-square-foot estate features seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and extensive outdoor space.
Fisher is also in the process of selling his Major League Soccer franchise, the San Jose Earthquakes, though he confirmed those proceeds won’t be directed toward the ballpark construction.
The intimacy gambit
Despite the mounting costs, Fisher remains focused on creating what he calls “the most intimate ballpark in baseball.” The design philosophy emphasizes bringing fans closer to the action in a smaller venue that contrasts sharply with the trend toward larger stadiums.
Whether this intimacy will justify the extraordinary price tag remains to be seen. With construction underway but financing questions lingering, the Athletics’ Vegas gamble continues to evolve into one of the most expensive bets in sports history.
