Sixers capture first Vegas summer league win with Edgecombe’s return

The Philadelphia 76ers earned their first victory in Las Vegas summer league action Tuesday night, defeating the Washington Wizards 74-58 in a defensive battle at the Thomas & Mack Center. The win was highlighted by the return of No. 3 overall draft pick VJ Edgecombe, who had missed four games with a left thumb sprain.
Edgecombe shakes off rust in comeback
Edgecombe logged 30 minutes in his Las Vegas debut, finishing with 15 points on 4-for-14 shooting, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The 19-year-old Baylor product showed some expected rust after his extended absence, starting 0-for-7 from the field and remaining scoreless through the first half.
The rookie’s first points came via free throws after drawing a foul on an aggressive drive to the basket in the third quarter. He eventually found his rhythm, connecting on a dunk and later assisting on an alley-oop with teammate Justin Edwards.
Supporting cast steps up
Edwards led all scorers with 17 points, providing steady offensive production for Philadelphia. The Sixers also received strong contributions from their frontcourt players, with Johni Broome adding 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting effectively from three-point range.
Adem Bona continued his impressive shot-blocking performance in Vegas, recording six blocks to bring his summer league total to 11 through three games. The defensive presence helped the Sixers control the paint against Washington.
Defensive effort secures victory
Philadelphia’s defense was the story of the game, holding Washington to just 58 points and forcing numerous turnovers. After a slow start that saw the Sixers fall behind 9-0 early, the team settled in and took control with balanced scoring and strong defensive rotations.
The victory improves Philadelphia’s summer league record to 1-2 as they prepare for their next matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. For Edgecombe, the return represents an important step in his development after missing time with the thumb injury that initially occurred during Salt Lake City summer league play.
The young guard’s impressive debut performance of 28 points and 10 rebounds against Utah had generated significant buzz before the injury sidelined him for multiple games in Las Vegas.
